Like you said, it is okay if you don't consistently engage with everyone's posts. But I also think that it is extremely unlikely that you reach a critical mass at which it is IMPOSSIBLE for you to EVER "catch up" even if you want to, like it is so easy to do on other social media sites.
I think that the effort required to interact with Dreamwidth means that it is pretty unlikely that low-effort trolls are going to take up residence here. It is too easy to troll elsewhere. I am not going to say that there weren't toxic behaviors or harassment in LJ-fandom of yore, but it was a different beast.
