This is kind of fun, so I decided to share here:
Feel free to steal or ask me more.
Here are my answers so far:
6:A song that makes you want to dance
To me, there are three kinds of "makes me want to dance" -- there's kind wanting to know choreographed music to like the theater kid I sort of was, there's the stuff I used to fantasize about dancing in clubs to as a teenager before I realized that I hated clubbing, and then there's the stuff that makes me want to do something athletic and sexy like pole dancing (which I have also never done).
I'm really struggling to pick between these. Recently, spotify compiled a playlist of everyone's most-ever streamed songs, and the most "dance-y" song in my top 5 is:
I know that the reason for this is because of the period of time where I was really into watching movies and was into 500 Days of Summer. I know that a lot of people cringed a lot, but I guess as someone who was unlucky in love and in my early 20s, I could sympathize with the cringey protagonist a little but also appreciated the irony or the point the movie was trying to make???
I remember being really into it for some reason in university.
Anyway, I am sure that's where I heard this song, but I also grew up with a mom who liked cheesy soft rock and adult contemporary, so I could've heard this before.
11:A song that you never get tired of
A lot of the songs I never get tired of are Taylor Swift back catalog stuff, but since I didn't really like her most recent album, I figure I'll do another one that has very much lasted the test of time in my head.
This band had a radio hit called "Guys My Age" about dating older, more "mature" men, which I did like but I absolutely love a lot of the other songs on that specific album more, including this one. The giant sound, the lyrical sentiment for shipping vibes (silly but defiant and tragic and a lil crazy idk), and the aesthetic of the video all are like catnip to me:
30:A song that reminds you of yourself
A part of me feels this is a little too dramatic or stolen valor for me to say, since Kesha went through a very high profile grooming and abuse case that probably subjected her to a lot more physical pain and violation than I experienced, but I had a very brief but abusive relationship when I first started high school that a lot of the things I have failed to do or only did later in life sort of hinges on. So, when this song came out, it just completely... washed over me in a way that felt like cathartic pain. I had kind of forgotten about it, but that aforementioned Spotify top-streams-ever list had this on it, and I have been reminded again.
I also just really like the weird aesthetic of the video and the preamble on the video. I am also a big fan of secular songs that riff on or reference religious doubt without being so entirely cynical that they alienate those of us who do believe in God. I have a playlist of those, and I sometimes find them more worshipful in my heart -- just working through the emotions -- than any more explicitly religious and pious music.
9:A song that makes you happy
There are obviously a lot of these, but recently, I feel like the one that comes to mind is:
The funny thing about it is, a friend I don't get to talk to that much was like "Hey have you heard the new Olivia Rodrigo song?" and since I live under a rock in Japan, I hadn't. I went to check it out, and my initial impression was a little cynical and like "it's catchy, but I feel like the lyrics are kind of ephemeral nothing" but they grew on me as like just a happy and silly vibes or potentially-shippy song, which is always how they get me...
Again, I like how BIG it is and it just makes me wanna jump around. I recently listened to it on repeat on a swing at a park.
11:A song that you never get tired of
As mentioned on my previous response for these asks, a lot of the music I am just perpetually into is Taylor Swift back catalog stuff. Until this last album, I generally liked at least the majority of her album drops. I think she's a pretty good lyricist at her best.
Again, being totally honest with myself, I am picking one of hers.
Warning: one lyric that's about suicidal ideation (at least could be read that way)
Again, I am just a sucker for GIANT sparkly-sounding pop, I guess, but I think this song just hit at a moment when Taylor had peak good will, which she quickly sort of lost. It is from the 1989 (Taylor's Version) "from the Vault" songs, and to be honest, I like all of the from the Vault songs from that album better than anything on the original album.
The lyrics of this song are unhinged and silly and dark, and I like the dissonance. It just feels like relatable emotion even if it's toxic??? Also there's something about the maiden/model juxtaposition in the progressive verses that's just... oof. I don't know why. It gets me.
30:A song that reminds you of yourself
Ugh I am such a drama queen/baby when I try to think of songs that I started liking because I related to them about myself. A lot of my happy music associations are about the blorbos or ships, so...
This song I heard on some radio station while driving to my hometown from some other city in Tennessee where I used to live, and it just... resonated with me.
I am doing fairly well these days, but I definitely get frustrated with the SSRI and other drug-related dulling of emotion that I do have to deal with to keep a relative equilibrium and wish I felt more vivid than I often do. So that's why, I guess.
23:A song that you think everybody should listen to
When I try to think of music "everybody" should listen to, I guess I think of showtunes for some reason, which is weird because I know so many people who find musicals cringe or difficult to take seriously.
But. Come on.
This past year (and I think every year) this group of musical theater nerds called Heart GLOBAL do a tour around the world where they work with kids to create "empowerment through art" and what this mostly involved at the school where I worked was this like three or four day workshop they did with the Year 7 kids, and because I knew a handful of the kids and I like theater nerd stuff, I went to see their final rehearsal and performance for parents.
They did several songs, but one that for some reason just brought me to tears hearing kids sing after I had been feeling kind of numbed out for a while was this song from The Greatest Showman:
I don't know if the kids themselves were as moved while some of them were singing and others were doing backup / choreography, but they did so good for amateur 12/13 year olds!!! Some of them are so tiny, and I love them.
But yeah the original song got stuck in my head, and it was a moment when I felt like a song reached down for me, and I just feel like people need to work through this song and its lyrics feelings and implications...
I've never seen the movie, so here's the context, I guess. I knew it was about the circus "freak show" set.
24:A song by a band you wish were still together
Honestly, the only band that I can think of that I have both followed at all and that I know has officially broken up without a reunion happening over time (because their official breakup wasn't that long ago and they weren't mega-famous) is Hey Violet. I already mentioned them in a previous reply, but basically an LA-based band that had a sort of rotating roster but with a specific lead vocalist. I mostly like the album "From the Outside" but the only other song I heard from them after learning they had broken up that I like is this one that feels ship-friendly:
It's sort of basic but I like some of the imagery? It has that ~pop accent~ a lot, but it's fun.
30:A song that reminds you of yourself
This song is just immediately relatable to me because of the title. I was homeschooled from 4th grade before returning to school in 10th grade (when high school in America starts in 9th):
I just can really relate to not understanding social cues and having no clue how to tell when people like me, platonically or romantically, in generic and loud social situations.
1:A song you like with a color in the title
2:A song you like with a number in the title
3:A song that reminds you of summertime
4:A song that reminds you of someone you would rather forget about
5:A song that needs to be played LOUD
6:A song that makes you want to dance
7:A song to drive to
8:A song about drugs or alcohol
9:A song that makes you happy
10:A song that makes you sad
11:A song that you never get tired of
12:A song from your preteen years
13:One of your favorite 80’s songs
14:A song that you would love played at your wedding
15:A song that is a cover by another artist
16:One of your favorite classical songs
17:A song that would sing a duet with on karaoke
18:A song from the year that you were born
19:A song that makes you think about life
20:A song that has many meanings to you
21:A favorite song with a person’s name in the title
22:A song that moves you forward
23:A song that you think everybody should listen to
24:A song by a band you wish were still together
25:A song by an artist no longer living
26:A song that makes you want to fall in love
27:A song that breaks your heart
28:A song by an artist with a voice that you love
29:A song that you remember from your childhood
30:A song that reminds you of yourself
Feel free to steal or ask me more.
