Batfamily

Blood of the Covenant by [archiveofourown.org profile] Chemical_Processes
Working as a street fighter in the Iceberg lounge, Jason manages to attract all the wrong sort of attention. Tense, believable AU where Jason never becomes Robin but eventually gets tangled up in Bat business anyway.

Can't Raise Hell as a Saint by [archiveofourown.org profile] historical_allusions
When an adult Jason Todd is thrown into the past, he must balance raising his childhood self with reinventing his vigilante personae, all without revealing his knowledge of the future...

A task made infinitely more difficult when he starts changing things in the past and attracts the attention of a young Batman and Robin.
Compelling time travel adventure for Jason.

Damian's Secret Friend by [archiveofourown.org profile] LakeAwen
5 times Damian's family panicked over him sneaking out, and 1 time they found out who he was meeting. Oh heart.

the picture frames have changed and so has your name by [archiveofourown.org profile] Zahri
There's something wrong with Dick.

Tim thought everything was getting back to normal. Bruce was alive and back in their timeline, the Birds of Prey were once again operating out of Gotham, Dick had the city well under control as Batman and even Damian had been less obnoxious than usual.

And then during a firefight at a warehouse by the docks, Tim was almost hit by a flying boomerang. And Dick never noticed.

When something is wrong with your big brother, who else do you turn to but your big sisters?
Interesting casefic with real emotional stakes, plus the Birds of Prey!

Purr-ple Power by [archiveofourown.org profile] Cephalogod
In which Batman thoroughly rejects young Stephanie Brown's attempts to join the vigilante lifestyle, but Catwoman is much more willing to take on a protege.

Especially a protege with a demonstrated talent for getting under Batman's skin.

The Bats aren't going to know what hit them.
This series is super cute!

The Right Substitution is Key by [archiveofourown.org profile] AddictedApple
When Batman and Nightwing disappear, Tim recruits up and coming crime lord Red Hood to fill in as Batman. Hijinks ensue. This is a lot of fun.

The Road to Recovery. by [archiveofourown.org profile] orpheusaki
I enjoyed these two (unconnected?) stories of Bruce and Jason reconciling and getting to know each other again.

Rotten Work by [archiveofourown.org profile] ManURonaldo
Dick is supposed to be on a boring stakeout assignment. Jason complicates that. <333

Shortcut to Maturity by [archiveofourown.org profile] Isonian
Jason is just trying to survive on the streets of Gotham--made slightly more difficult by the fact that some gang has apparently decided to make him their most wanted person. Until he befriends a kid-who-definitely-isn't-Robin, who promises to help him reunite with his dad. And, well, Jason's not in the habit of accepting favors. But maybe it would be worth it, just this once.

Featuring ghosts or zombies or hallucinations, misunderstandings (both unintentional and entirely intentional), lots of identity shenanigans, and some discussion of dads.
I really enjoyed this team-up between feral street kid Jason and hiding-he's-Robin Tim!

A Tale of Two Memoirs by [archiveofourown.org profile] goldenraeofsun
Batman's tell-all memoir is about to publish. Normally, Bruce wouldn't care about the 100th Batman parody to hit the shelves. But when he gets his hands on an early sample, he finds this memoir contains a troubling amount of truth about him and his family.

Bruce can't let this stand. As he knows better than most, the only way to squash a scandal is to create an even bigger scandal. Dominate the news circuit. Take up all the publisher's publicity resources. Sure, he has never written a book before, but how hard can it really be?

Well, as Clark tells him, those are some famous last words, Bruce.
Oh my heart...

Third Robin Tales by [archiveofourown.org profile] weekend_conspiracy_theorist
Currently a series of semi-connected scenes within a world where Bruce encountered Stephanie as Spoiler before Tim decided that if no one else was going to be Robin, then he had to. Tim and Steph found each other anyway. This AU is a lot of fun, with excellent Steph & Tim interaction.

told the world i had a plan by [archiveofourown.org profile] a_alene
Three glimpses into an AU where Jason survives Ethiopia and comes home. I enjoyed them!

two can keep a secret by [archiveofourown.org profile] carolinaa
Steph doesn't tell anybody that her mom died. Everyone's always bitching and moaning about cleaning up her messes, so Steph handles this one all on her own.

No problem.
Ouch. Oh Steph...

Percy Jackson/Avengers

Can I Write 'Tried to Rob Tony Stark' On My Resume? by [archiveofourown.org profile] hyperInactive
Percy was at least happy that this wasn't a prophecy. Stealing back some demigod weapons from a mortal? Sure, Iron Man was a superhero and a genius, but after dealing with Gaea, that was nothing. They just had to steer clear of anyone who might recognize them, and they were positive that they could pull it off easier than most of their quests. And potentially land Leo a job, while they're at it.

But Percy should have known better. Nothing is ever that simple for a demigod.
This is a lot of fun!

Percy Jackson/Batfamily

The Acolyte by [archiveofourown.org profile] Anonymous
The war ends. Kronos falls.

Percy is tired. He's tired of being the leader, the hero, the general, the prophesied. He's tired of fate. He's tired of the Gods.

Good thing the Gods can't reach Gotham.
Long, interesting crossover where Percy flees to Gotham and ends up involved with the Bats.

Birdfeeding

Today is partly sunny, humid, and hot.  It drizzled yesterday evening.

I haven't fed the birds yet, but I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.  They've put a good dent in the thistle seed again.

EDIT 6/30/25 -- I fed the birds.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/30/25 -- I refreshed the mosquito dunks.

I refilled the hopper feeder and thistle feeder.

EDIT 6/30/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/30/25 -- I picked a handful of blackberries.  They're coming in nicely.  :D

Tsundoku Stack, June 30, 2025

There’s been not much progress on my tsundoku stack since Last Month. I decided I should dispatch the local guides to Portland books, since it’s summer, and this is a good time to be out and about, exploring the city. I did achieve that goal – as well as consume some late entrants not actually in the tsundoku stack.

For the remainder of the summer, work on the stack is in jeopardy, as I am diving into the library remodel – which effectively requires a move/vacating of the entire room – a major undertaking. I don’t think I’m going to get much reading done for a while.

feeling a bit better today. whatever physical/chemical ailment that was causing that intense emotional discomfort has seemed to ease off a bit. it's not gone. i don't think i've felt it totally leave for more than a fleeting moment here or there in a couple of years, at least it seems that way. that hot tight ball of discomfort is still there in the center of my body, but it's less intense, today.

dragged my husband up a beloved trail yesterday. i was giddy from the get-go. trails just make me happy. i was miserable in the morning, Avalanche was sneezing so I finally swept the floors, despite the terrible timing, and have never seen so much dust and fur. Josh actively gets in the way of this chore but I just pushed through this time, I can't leave Avalanche in a dirty apartment like that. Or us. I felt much better when that was done.

I got my beargrass fix on Silver Star mountain. I'll post pics later.

We got a late start on a hot day but I was happy anyway. Josh ended up pretty melted, but I fed him lunch at the top, and on the way home we saw a girl on a street corner with one of those fabulous fruit carts that are all over the place in Venice Beach, so we got one of those and it was heavenly and perked him up quite a bit. We also got ice cream and n/a beer and n/a wine and drinks on the way home so I will never lose this stubborn extra 7lbs but oh well lol.

Need to try to get some office work done before I leave and I have not much time, I am nervous about seeing a new Ob/Gyn tomorrow and hope at least I'll have someone I can consistently get hormones from who won't argue with me about it.

Pondering chelation surgery and running. I miss it so. It's the only thing that stabilized my mood consistently. Not sure if cutting into my body is the right way to go. The last surgeon I talked to about it told me to just do whatever I want and when it's bad enough I can get the joint fused. But it feels bad enough now. I don't want to hobble myself at age 50. I hate that I can't even do push-ups without shoes on, it hurts my toes too much with the bone spurs in them. I'm down to only 10 push-ups after having 30 last year. But. I so desperately want to run. I am so miserable without it. It's been almost two and a half years and I have not found a way to deal with not being able to run, yet. I keep trying things but nothing is the same, or there are barriers that I can't seem to overcome. Maybe I just haven't found the right alternative, yet.

...

On Silver Star, we saw a pika! I've heard them many many times while hiking in rocky areas, including on our way up this trail yesterday, but this is the first time I actually laid eyes on one - they are pretty shy. It was the cutest aaaaaagh! They are related to rabbits. Josh spotted it before I did, on our way down.

(We did not get a photo, but this was taken in the same general area, this is what they look like, squeeeeeeee! They live in rocks and make funny little nests full of plant fluff and they make a cute little Pi! barking/squeaking like sound.)

BBC Earth did a silly little profile of them years ago:

Game reaction: Relooted

A South African video game studio (not a phrase I think I've ever typed before) has created a game called Relooted, a heist game where the objective is to rob museums and steal back African artifacts. I'm pretty sure my computer isn't powerful enough for me to be able to play it once it's released, but I love the idea and I look forward to seeing more games like this.

I recent listened to Green Day's latest album Saviors (édition de luxe) for the first time. I liked the whole thing, but I've especially latched on to "Fancy Sauce." The chorus is like a Russian nesting doll of Easter eggs: The tune of the chorus is like a greatly slowed down version of the can-can song (Offenbach?), while the lyrics of the chorus contain call-outs to Suicidal Tendencies ("I'm not crazy, you're the one that's crazy") and Nirvana ("stupid and contagious"). Enjoy!

Between finally getting off of Keppra (with its side effects of lethargy and sleepiness) and finally starting to get caught up on all the things I fell behind on during my long Keppra-induced nap, I feel like I'm finally starting to get back into my usual life again. Barring unforeseen events (which is never a safe thing to do, and yet I persist on doing it anyway), you should start seeing me around here more often, hopefully even reading and commenting on your posts.

We made it to the end of June! \o/ If you have completed some of your medium-term goals or subgoals, and/or you're still chugging away at your ongoing goals, then pat yourself on the back. You worked hard for that. We've also entered summer. If you're doing seasonal goals, hopefully you have finished the spring one(s), and started on the summer batch.

This year I'm trying something new, continuing to track goals at the end of each month. So far it seems to be helping, so that's encouraging. I'm looking at my goal list more often and trying to keep ticking off more of them. The main drawback is that this update becomes more of a chore each month.

Season finale spoiler )

During the Christmas episode we saw the firm's acapella group, which might have just been an excuse to highlight one character's amazing singing voice. Anyway, they were singing White Winter Hymnal, and I'm going to just post two quick videos, the original version and a different acapella cover:

(Those lyrics can't be entirely right - surely the pack is swaddled in their coats, not swallowed?)

Anyway, you'll notice that in the first one they weirdly pronounce "the" with a "long e" (the vowel in pee) before the words "white snow". Does that strike anybody else as a weird place to do that?

Crossover time!

Sex swap in seconds: The fish that takes charge and changes gender

Remove the top male spotty fish and, within minutes, the next-in-line female morphs into the tank s new tyrant charging and nipping rivals while her body quietly begins a weeks-long transition to male.

Sex and gender are more fluid than most humans realize. Transition is a natural and normal process.

Buried for 23,000 years: These footprints are rewriting American history

Footprints found in the ancient lakebeds of White Sands may prove that humans lived in North America 23,000 years ago — much earlier than previously believed. A new study using radiocarbon-dated mud bolsters earlier findings, making it the third line of evidence pointing to this revised timeline.

I've been to White Sands. Interesting place, but bizarre. The air is blistering hot, but sand stays cool. Its albedo is too high to absorb much heat.

Ultimate Madoka

Framed Madoka Ukiyo-e After Materials Upgrade
Framed Madoka Ukiyo-e After Materials Upgrade

I’ve been having custom picture framing done since the 1990s, when I began collecting and occasionally displaying anime cels.

My History of Frame Shops Below This Cut )

A New Project Below This Cut )

The new art piece has to be compatible with the Ukiyo-e Madoka, so I brought the framed Madoka Ukiyo-e in so that the framer could see nuances in the Akihabara Premium frame. Tony said it was a good thing that I did as the photos I showed were insufficient.

As we had wrapped up discussion, Tony noted that the framed Madoka had a plexiglas front. I tapped the clear panel, and, yes, it was plastic. I hadn’t even noticed. (I don’t normally touch glass in frames.) I asked if he could replace the plexiglas with Museum Glass. He said, sure, no problem. I don’t remember what led us to do this, but Tony then removed the back panel – and we both were surprised to find a thick block of styrofoam. That’s bad, commented Tony. He didn’t have to tell me twice. This was not archival quality work. Tony offered to add an acid-free foam core sheet behind the print to protect the print. He wrote up a ticket for the glass and the foam core – and it came to $117. Cheap yet important protection. This was a no brainer.

At 11:00 am the next day (Friday) I got a call from Tony saying the work was done and that I could pick up Madoka. Awesome! In less than a day my Ukiyo-e framed print received a pro archival upgrade. At the store, Tony said that with the new glass and the foam core, the original styrofoam block no longer fit. He had extra foam core that he used to pad the thickness, and we scrapped the styrofoam. I said I’d pay extra, but he waved me off.

Madoka is now back home on the wall. The Museum Glass is super clear (and more importantly, UV resistant). This is now truly an Ultimate Madoka!

Talk of the world situation and depression... )

Things at work are going well for me; it's a huge relief off my shoulders to no longer be responsible for everything that goes wrong and fixing every problem in a department where I was working with someone who couldn't carry their own weight/responsibilities. I really like my new supervisor; she's the type I can really work alongside as we are alike in a lot of ways and see the job duties the same way.

Anyway, here's a new feel-good video from Jared Halley. Now I want to go listen to some Chicago. It reminds me of the pleasant summer days of my youth when the world seemed brighter. I should swap out the playlist I listen to in the car, too.
