High School AU?

I dunno - It depends. There are certain circumstances where characters are in a setting that is just wildly outside the "norm" but who would be in high school if they didn't live in a dystopia or whatever. In those cases, I kind of like to see fics that let them deal with more normal, mundane issues that would face these high school aged kids. Like, I'd read a well-thought-out Hunger Games High School AU for example. However, for the most part, I don't like No Powers | Mundane AUs, and I don't like major age-downs for adult characters because it is sort of strange, boring, and insecurity-stoking for someone like me who's in her late 20s.

I find myself agreeing with your assessment, it can be good but it usually isn't my favorite. I'll give you another one (and this one I am weak to ;)):

Oh god you don’t even know - I love it so much! I adore the Stargate SG-1 episode that is literally Jack experiencing this trope over and over again. In the show itself, he gives in and kisses Carter once, just because why the hell not, but I remember a particularly enjoyable Jack/Daniel RP my best friend and I slotted into there many years ago. It is so chock full of potential for plot, character development, and shipping!!! I love it when it's everyone, a small group, or even one person. Maybe when it's one person most of all because of something similar to the ethical tickle of sex pollen, even if it isn't necessarily sex that comes of it, if that makes sense.

Bed Sharing

FUCK yes - I love it. There's so much one can do with it from the sweet and tooth-rotting to the FINALLY. Lemme tell you about a scene in an anime I like, 'kay? If you ever get through Fate, it is another thing I'd like to share :P

There's a character death spoiler here at about 3:45 if you... care... but like I imagine if you ever get to it that you'll have long-forgotten who any of the supporting people are lol. Anyway the first six and a half minutes of this episode are HEAVEN. (Also the pop-ups on the site are worse than I remember but they're closable.)

FUCK yes - Not sure if I picked this answer in part for pun purposes. Anyway, I love this. Earlier on isabellerec's journal I was responding to her response to sex pollen, and I view sex pollen and fuck or die and aliens made them do it under more or less the same umbrella. I really enjoy it as a set-up for fics where the characters already want to do stuff but maybe aren't aware of mutual interest. I don't want people genuinely not wanting the other person at all prior to it. However, I find it interesting (if a bit sad) as a way to instigate people coming to terms with their feelings. It's one of the few kinds of dubcon I'm okay with, and I think it is dubcon for sure, even if it briefly masquerades as enthusiastic consent, depending on the situation. My favorite would be a fic that didn't just stop after the not-so-bad-after-all sex but one that deals with the fallout of "I love you but that was genuinely weird and maybe something we need to process." It's almost comforting, in a weird way, if it includes that, because it kind of touches upon something that is a little more real, in my opinion, about how at least in theory romantic-sexual relationships rarely come together as neatly as tidier stories suggest.

ABO

rather not - So the thing is, I like ritualistic sex that falls more in line with the sex pollen or, like, ancient magic rituals or Old Ones or aliens or whomstever want them to do it. However, with ABO, it smacks of a kind of biological determinism that kind of seems a bit too along the lines of might makes right, being made-for-sex or whatever. If it's a person's bag, fine, but I just have #concerns and it doesn't sit right.
