Yeah, and to me, that correlation with the real world is what makes HYDRA interesting. I mean, how do otherwise decent people get caught up in shit like that? How do people justify certain things in their minds, and persuade themselves that they're the real good guys? What comes to my mind are some of the conservative attitudes in people around me immediately after 9/11. Suddenly, people I'd always thought of as normal were saying we just needed to trust the government and that sometimes you have to sacrifice a little to be safe. I actually heard someone say that no one who isn't doing anything wrong should have a problem with any of the new legislation that broadened the definition of terrorism and more or less removed the right of those suspected of terrorism. Life's gotten way more unsettling since then, but that was my first look at the change that happens inside of ordinary people when they decide someone else might have to get hurt in order for them to stay safe -- and that they're okay with that.

I'd like to write a chapter story (crosses finger) that foregrounds Rollins/Rumlow, but that takes into account STRIKE as it's been fanonically developed. I want to show this team engaging in the kind of thinking you say Ward demonstrates and some of the sort I've seen in real life, and then I'm going to let them win. And then I want to make the hammer fall on them. I'm really in love with the idea of these guys ending up fleeing from an organization in which they'd anticipated advancing because there was never any way that HYDRA ever intended to allow people like them to hold authority. I don't know if HYDRA fans will like that story, but it's one I really want to tell.
