An addendum: I read the page and then clicked on a few of the footnotes. I already knew that I was fairly unimpressed with Pullman's take on the whole matter, but I found this article actually rather stomach-churning: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2005/dec/05/cslewis.booksforchildrenandteenagers

Of course The Guardian is pretty well-known to be controversy-stirring pulp as far as I know, but it really bothers me that we are often sort of seesawing between the notion of religious tolerance and this abolitionist stuff where people can say cruel, sweeping things about Christianity in particular because they believe that it is itself a bully. This is the kind of rhetoric that makes me feel embattled, even if it doesn't directly threaten my life.
