So there is a song called "2021" by Vampire Weekend that has a pleasantly sort of haunting atmosphere. It is about the passage of time and the melancholy involved with it. But it apparently samples its music from this tape from 1984 which was commissioned from a Japanese musician as background music for a shop. And it is WEIRD.

My best friend wasn't so much a fan of the Vampire Weekend song, but she picked out some gems from the comments after I noted that the first one I saw, "This is the music that plays when you get to the end of youtube," was pretty great.

And they only got better.

A sampling courtesy of my best friend:

  • this is like watching a clock that only has an hour hand
  • This reminds me of every mango I ate as a boy.
  • I played this at my vacuum cleaner's funeral.
  • I would play this in my basement if I were raising moths
  • this sounds like how gummy vitamins taste
  • This is the music my hair listens to
  • this is the music that plays when a chair realises that he is a chair
  • public service announcement jingle for a city of worms
  • This is the song that plays as the dentist removes every one of my teeth, each one having the face of a family member engraved on it
  • This is the music that your toes listen to when you betray them by slamming them into furniture.
  • This is exactly the perfect music for when I'm grocery shopping for lettuce in bulk.

And there are even more. And I discovered upon closer examination that there is a twitter account dedicated to the comments, and I think it is the best twitter account so far.

Edit: The above comment is an example of the funny, surreal ones but this one really resonates with me in a more serious way.
